Republic Lost author @lessig on money corrupting elections #DemocracyNow #occupy

Lawrence argues against corporate lobbying and calls for a constitutional amendment to limit their influence in elections.

Invisible money from corporations will impact the 2012 elections. We don’t debate this.

Corruption in elections strikes to the root of our existence as the United States of America. Romney says that corporations are owned by people, and that means it’s ok to let them finance candidates.

Lessig proposes something more intense than a debate. A very few people fund public elections. These elections are spending sprees by the moneyed class.

Public funding with limits on individual expenditures would recalibrate the election away from invisible SuperPAC ad budgets.

Gingrich is ironically suffering from the system he helped create. Reforming the system requires people who demand a system we can trust.

Why is America corrupt? We deserve better. Democracy must work and the economic pull of money is shredding it.

Buddy Roemer is a candidate for the GOP nomination that is not allowed to debate. Lessig sees this candidate as representing a reasonable perspective on campaign finance.

Obama has forgotten this issue. He’s out to raise more than $1bn for this election. As President the money has continued to flow and corrupt unabated.

Occupy recognizes the corruption of this government. This is a mainstream issue that should appeal to all Americans.

Conventions generated from the state level may be an opportunity to reframe the Constitution as a way to reform the corrupt Congress from the outside.
